The Broome County Health Department offers Communicable Disease Control, which provides follow-up on certain communicable diseases. Information on communicable diseases and their prevention.

Programs that protect and improve the health of the population through comprehensive efforts at the community level to prevent, control and eradicate disease and disabilities; eliminate environmental health hazards; promote sanitary living conditions; and recognize, prevent and control conditions in the workplace that constitute health hazards or place workers at risk for accidents.

A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants will learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

A Matter of Balance includes eight, 2hour sessions for adults ages 60-years-of -age and older. Classes are facilitated by certified volunteer coaches. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends.

Communicable disease may be spread from person to person or animal to person through bodily fluids or direct contact. Spread of contagious disease may also occur by inhaling infected air or ingesting infected food or water. Essex County Public Health Department is responsible for minimizing the impact of communicable disease, through mandated activities such as investigation, reporting, education and outreach, and promoting prevention strategies. Essex County Public Health offers immunizations, prevention and control of rabies, tick and mosquito-borne disease, and education, screening, and counseling for HIV, HCV, and STD.

The nursing staff in the clinic can assist with multiple health concerns. They have open clinics available with appointments where you can get your flu shot, and COVID shot. The nurses also help with Maternal/Child Health, Sexually transmitted diseases, Ticks and Lyme Disease, Breast Feeding and the Baby Nook, and much much more. Preventive health programs provide a broad range of services for county residents which include: home visits for health assessment, guidance, and supervision; communicable disease case investigation for reportable diseases; community screenings and education along with other services for health and human service agencies, schools, businesses and residents.

Diagnostic and Treatment Center (Clinic): Numerous clinic services are provided to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases. Some services are provided without charge. For others, donations or established fees are requested.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic: Tuesdays, 12:30pm - 3:30pm. Offering STD assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Patient counseling and community education help control and prevent disease. For HIV, education, anonymous and confidential pre and post-test counseling, testing, follow-up and referral services are provided. HIV counseling and testing is integrated with the STD assessment to ensure the provision of comprehensive health care for all patients. Clinic services are provided without charge during Tuesday walk-in clinics, as well as by appointment for specific follow up as necessary.
