    Adult Protective Services investigates abuse and neglect in persons 18 years of age and older who:

    • Have a physical or mental impairment

    and

    • Are at risk of harm or have an unmet need

    and

    • Have no one willing and able to assist appropriately.

    Adult Protective Services assists with:

    • Investigation and assessment of the adult's needs and risk of harm.

    • Advocacy and case management services, applying for benefits and assuring coordinated delivery services.

    • Financial management services, including serving as representative payee.

    Adult Protective Services is a mandated New York state program and it exists in every county in the state. Every effort is made to keep individuals in the community, or in the least restrictive environment.

    Adult Protective Services has:

    • Legal authority to obtain bank records in cases where financial exploitation is suspected.

    • It can access orders through the court system in order to obtain entry into a home to assess for abuse or neglect.

    • It can become a person’s guardian (personal and/or property.)
