An ABI is a self-sustaining business or cooperative that is owned and operated by an OMH provider (such as a small retail or wholesale outlet, or manufacturing and service-oriented business). An ABI provides integrated, competitive, employment opportunities for individuals with serious mental illness along with mental health supports onsite. The OMH funding is for the mental health supports needed for the person to be successful at the job. Those supports may include assisting someone in interpreting and responding appropriately to interpersonal situations at work, or learning to cope with mental health symptoms to enhance their work performance. Financial/Benefits Counseling may be provided. Care should be taken to ensure policies exist to separate the provision of mental health support from work supervision. An agency that operates a Personalized Recovery Oriented Services program (PROS) is not eligible to operate an Affirmative Business/Industry (ABI).
